This picture was taken during a tour that I took. We were allowed to sit and listen to the orchestra practice for an upcoming opera. It's suppose to be one of the top acoustic buildings in the world. Luciano Pavarotti said, "its acoustics are perfect! Imagine what this signifies for the singer: if one sings something bad, one notices immediately." Ask for tickets for a show. The opera may not be in town, but they hold regular local shows. They're less formal and the tickets are super cheap. The energy level of the country is hard to explain. However, after the actual day of celebration everything shuts down and everyone travels home to visit their families. I would not recommend planing a trip to Vietnam after the day of Tet. It's significant because I road from Lisbon to Berlin and this is the one that I struggled with the most. I went from my guest house, in the heart of the city center, to Wat Phratht Doi Suthep. It's a 30km ride almost straight up. It took me 3 hrs to climb the "mountain" with a 45 minute decent. The climb had me almost in tears, but the decent was exhilarating. They have 1 son and 1 daughter. Tao's machine shop and house is right across from the hostel (you can see the hostel in the background). Tao and his employees are extremely hard workers. They work 6 days a week and 12-14 hr/day. Pool is the life of any party, and what she says goes. She radiates a positive energy that is addicting. For less than 20 bhat (.50 cents) you can take a 1.5 hour sunset cruise along the city's Chap Phraya River, the city's western most river. It's typically used as local transportation, but some savvy tourists use it as a cruise. It runs along major tourist destinations like Khao San Road and under the Kanchanaphisek Bridge (yellow cable bridge). The cheapest, safest, and best way to get around the city. While in Bangkok I learned the BTS well. Because traffic can be terrible at certain times of the day, I found that a combination of the moto bikes, or tuks, and BTS work the best. Taxis are also nice because they are safe and metered. Tip: If you can't explain where you want to go to a taxi, tuk, or moto bike driver, make sure you at least know what BTS stop is closest to your destination and tell them to go there. They'll know all the BTS stops. It's a scene I will never forget... A body held over the heads of family members, mourning and chanting. All the bodies are kept in a few large buildings by the waters edge until it's time for the cremation to occur. Hindus believe that this is a "rite of passage". It's a 24 hour a day process that is very intense to witness.
